2012 was a great year in terms of Smartphones and gadgets. At one side, Samsung became the biggest smartphone company of the world on the other side,Nokia’s down fall begins and most probably will also continue in 2013.

This year, Android ate apple and rest of the apple survived. So, 2012 is the year dedicated to technology, smartphones, tablets etc. and as per your opinion we picked these devices into our top phones of 2012 list :-

5. After so much criticism, we still picked “People’s Phone” The Apple iphone 5 into our list. Apple stated that Apple iphone 5 is the result of great hard work and innovation. What we can distinguish between Apple iphone 4s and iphone 5 is a new row off apps i.e. increase in screen length :P . Only good thing we noticed is this phone is boosted by triple core graphics.

S3

Samsung Galaxy S III

Analyst firm Strategy Analytics has determined that during the third quarter of 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S III was the world’s best-selling smartphone.

Now, there is one problem for Samsung that does puts a slight shadow on this achievement for Samsung, and that’s ,The iPhone 5 was slated to launch at the end of Q3, which always slows down current-gen iPhone sales.

It’s also pretty unlikely Samsung will hold onto this title for Q4. The numbers? An estimate of 18 million Samsung Galaxy S III’s sold in Q3, and 16.2 million iPhone 4S’s.

This is still significant for Samsung. In fact, this is the first time ever that a single Android smartphone model has been estimated as the best-selling device in the world .There was little apprehension when Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S III that this would be the most popular Android smartphone yet, but when Samsung announced it had achieved 30 million S III sales, alongside 3 million Note II’s, We think it was then that the impact was made.

Samsung Galaxy S III Key Features

  • Android v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) OS upgradabable to 4.1 Jellybean
  • 8 MP Primary Camera
  • 1.9 MP Secondary Camera
  • 4.8-inch Super AMOLED Capacitive Touchscreen
  • 1.4 GHz Quad Core Processor
  • Expandable Storage Capacity of 64 GB

Yes, its so true. While the iPhone 5′s display is a notable upgrade from the previous version, it falls short of the Samsung Galaxy S3 display, according to a study from IHS. The study concluded that Samsung’s flagship phone had a screen that was both thinner and had a wider color gamut.

The Galaxy S3′s display is just 1.1 millimeters thick and offers the full color gamut of the NTSC standard. In comparison, the iphone5′s display is 1.5 millimeters thick and offers 72 percent of the standard color gamut.

With consumers increasingly concerned with the minute details and specifications of their mobile devices, the results are a win for Samsung, and further illustrate the point that Apple no longer leads when it comes to adding the latest and greatest technology. That was already highlighted by the fact the iPhone 5′s two biggest new features — a bigger display and 4G LTE — have long been found in Android devices.

Still, the specifications that IHS points to may be too deep in the weeds for all but the most hardcore fans, and the firm noted that the iPhone 5′s improvements over the previous iteration are more than enough to satisfy consumers.

“Such improvements on the iPhone 5 are consistent with Apple’s philosophy of selecting features designed to yield profitable products that deliver a superior customer experience, rather than of providing technology for technology’s sake,” said Vinita Jakhanwal, an analyst at IHS.

Well, there is more to this. Another study done by DisplayMate, which conducts testing for manufacturers, found that the iPhone 5′s display was “state-of-the-art accurate,” and only fell short to the new iPad in terms of accuracy and contrast.

iphone5 vs galaxy s3

DisplayMate president Raymond Soneira blasted the study, arguing that the color gamut test IHS conducted was based off of an old standard that has led to incorrect conclusions.

The analyst at IHS declined to comment on new standard or DisplayMate studies.

While the Galaxy S III has a thinner display, the iPhone 5 as a whole is a thinner device. Jakhanwah noted that the use of an in-cell display by Apple has improved the image quality of the phone. The iPhone 4S, for instance, was only able to display half the color gamut of the NTSC standard.

The difference in color gamut between the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 doesn’t necessarily mean iPhone users will get a worse experience, IHS said, adding that better calibration, higher brightness, and superior power efficiency of the display may result in more accurate and realistic representation of image color and contrasts.

“Some user reviews indicate that colors presented on the Galaxy S3 actually can look oversaturated and unrealistic,” Jakhanwal said. “While it may be interesting to compare the display specifications for the two phones, the actual front-of-screen viewing experience could diverge for different users.”

Samsung Touchwiz - AndroidNova.org

According to Phonearena.com, at the Ekoparty security conference, Ravi Borgaonkar presented a session entitled “dirty use of USSD Codes in Cellular Network” which demonstrated how with a few lines of html code the data can be wiped on Samsung Touchwiz Android devices if you click it, since Touchwiz has a feature to dial a code when link is clicked.

In addition to that, this also happens with QR scans and NFC –Samsung’s proprietary  TouchWiz makes the Phone dialer to automatically execute the sequence, which can potentially force a factory reset code onto your unsuspecting phone and wipe your data.

Also according to tweaker.net they verified that this is working at least in Galaxy S II and Galaxy Advance but a Galaxy SIII with a standard firmware loaded with Android 4.0.4 is not vulnerable to the browser hack , but it’s NFC variant is. Also according to tweaker.net the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note are also not vulnerable to the problem According to theverge.com, Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T variant, with the carrier’s version , is confirmed to have this problem. Samsung says that they are “looking into” the reports.

Here newsfactor.com states the new additions for the devices that this security hole exists are also the Galaxy Beam and Galaxy Ace, also we read that with the use of the same security hole you can deactivate the SIM card at the same time it wipes the phone. According to the same website, many security companies are reporting that malware attacks, spyware, mobile bot-nets and destructive Trojans for Android are on the rise, as expected as Android is the one of the most popular Mobile OS out there. According to the same website and other security companies, many ad-supported companies are accessing personal information without user’s notification or consent.
