Information coming from AndroidCommunity gave us good news for the users of LG Viper 4G LTE , that is of course that finally is getting Android 4 0 Ice Cream Sandwich starting today , and it will be arriving for all users over the next few days. The Now Network has just given the green light for the update and it’s rolling out as I type this article. More details below.

LG’s Viper 4G LTE still isn’t quite enjoying 4G LTE speeds in most of the country thanks to the carrier , but LG is making the experience even better by updating to their new and improved version of Ice Cream Sandwich. That includes all the UI enhancements, new features, Face Unlock, and many other improvements to the handset. Here is some of the improvements according to the update:

Just as we’ve already seen from Android 4.0 you will having a brand new user interface that is nice, improved unlock screen ,homescreen folders and such, as well re-sizable widgets and Face Unlock as mentioned above. The LG Viper 4G LTE runs a nearly stock version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but  now no LG skin or tweaks to the UI , a nearly vanilla version of Ice Cream Sandwich  . The device might not be powerful but with the update is getting better.

Based on the same web site the carrier states all users should receive the update over the course of the next few weeks.

Android Powered Set Top Box

The recent law enforcement by Indian government over mandatory use of Set Top Boxes in all 4 Indian metros have made us think about empowering cable TV owners with a great upgradation to digital cable era.
How this ‘great’  upgradation possible using TV Set Top Box.

Normally Indian users will upgrade their STB to the ones provided by their local cable service providers which are nothing but the branded/unbranded Set Top Box manufactured in china. We suggest Our Indian/overseas views to upgrade their cable Set Top Box to an Android Set Top Box for enjoying digital smart TV on their regular TV.This Android box can also act as a media station receiving media from USB,SD card,Wireless Network and Youtube.

EchoStar’s is a UK based company which manufactures set-top boxes for cable providers. For being able to take advantage of the Android-based devices bandwagon they have  manufactured a prototype  Android based Set Top Box.

The HDX-410 runs native Ice Cream Sandwich, and is available in two versions — one supports IP content and local storage exclusively, while a second can also accept terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) programming, letting you play back live TV shows in addition to content from a local server, pulled from the web or stored on attached media or an inserted microSD card.

It connects to the web using Ethernet or WiFi, and includes USB ports on both the front and the rear, Bluetooth, HDMI out, digital audio out and a standard-definition connection. It’s also paired with a QWERTY keyboard-equipped remote manufactured by Philips with gyroscopic or directional-pad curser control, along with pinch/zoom gesture capability.

The HDX-410 was running Android 4.0.4 and an early version of the company’s hybrid app, which groups “favorited” content alongside terrestrial channels, letting you use the standard channel up/down button to navigate through stored TV shows, IP content or live programming quite seamlessly, as if all of the media was playing from the same source. It’s clearly not yet ready for primetime, but the interface was sleek and speedy — the set-top box performed very well overall.

EchoStar representatives were unable to confirm whether or not the HDX-410 would be coming to market at all, but they did add that the solution may be made available to third-parties in the future. take a closer look in the hands-on video courtesy:Engadget.

Micromax Superfone Canvas A100 – Hands On

Micromax has recently launched 3 new phones which have caught our eyes: The Micromax Superfone Canvas A100, the Micromax Superfone Pixel A90 and the Micromax Superfone Elite A84.
But, The one that has caught our eyes most was the A100. We now go Hands-On the Micromax Superfone Canvas A100, and we promise to give a Hands On of the other two devices very soon.

The key features of this device are:

  • 5” capacitive screen with FWVGA (480×854) resolution
  • Android 4.0 ICS
  • 1 GHz Snapdragon S1 Scorpion processor (Dual core version coming soon!)
  • Dual SIM capabilities (GSM + GSM)
  • 5 Megapixel primary camera (with Flash)
  • 0.3 Megapixel front camera
  • Dimensions: 72.6 x 142.2 x 11.9 mm
  • Weight: 168g
  • 2000 mAh battery
  • 2 GB internal memory (1.32 GB usable)
  • MicroSDsupport (upto 32 GB)
  • 512 MB RAM

This device is a total value for money, considering the fact that it costs just Rs. 9990. The upcoming dual core version will give all the power needed to run this device, but the Snapdragon S1 processor in here is definitely not weak, just outdated. But the UI was pretty smooth, no lags in the UI. The Adreno 200 let us do normal gaming pretty good, but it couldn’t handle hardcore games like GTA 3.

The speaker was loud enough, definitely not the  loudest but loud enough, and the clarity was good enough too. The 5 MP rear shooter was average, but did not disappoint. Good enough, considering the price. The front VGA camera was below average.

You will get stock Android 4.0 UI, a pretty good experience, and we did not notice any lag during our test, but while multitasking, it started to lag a bit. Not to worry, a reboot was all that it needed.

The battery is pretty good, and powers the 5” screen very well. The screen itself reproduces colours well, text was crisp. One of the main selling points of this device is of course the screen. Indeed it impressed us pretty well.

Browsing experience was good, and after our site loaded fully, it was very smooth. Pinch to zoom was also pretty good in our test. But in heavy sites, we did notice lags while scrolling and pinch to zoom. Again, considering the price point, it indeed is very good.

So overall, it really is a really good device by Micromax. Looks are good, battery life is good, screen is amazing, camera is above average, and you also get a front camera. So if you are a casual user, and won’t be gaming much, this is a very good choice for you. Best device in the 12k price bracket. Our advice is not to multitask much with this device, as it runs out of memory.

“Today we’re starting our software rollout for Xperia go, Xperia U and Xperia sola including Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 upgrade and new unique media applications. The rollout will continue over the next few weeks in markets globally,” posted Sony on its official blog.

Phew , Finally ! In the wake of the Galaxy SIII and other major devices getting or officially announcing the JELLYBEAN rollout SONY realised where its lagging and now has stepped on the gas. This news may come as a relief to many customers of the new XPERIA line of smartphones which include the XPERIA GO , XPERIA U and XPERIA SOLA , who were beginning to get frustated about the delay of the new android os upgrade especially as many other devices are already expecting a jelly bean rollout and they have’nt even received the ICS ( Not a good move for a brand building its reputation ! )

The new media applications being introduced in the update are “Walkman”, “Album” and “Movies.” Company has also added a new ‘glove mode’ on Xperia sola in this update, this feature is an extension of ‘floating touch’ technology on the smartphone and will allow users to operate Xperia sola in the cold whilst wearing gloves.(AHHH the LUMIA effect right ? ) .
Glove mode is actually an extension of Floating touch technology that has been present in the sola ever since it first shipped. The technology allows the phone to register the position of your finger up to 20mm away from the screen by combining self capacitance and mutual capacitance displays . ( Neat stuff )
This is really cool by SONY but ( yes , there is a sad alsmost heart ripping , never a good news giving , kind of a big BUT always .. ok its not that bad also ) Sony has stated that consumers will have to connect their Xperia phones to a PC or Mac in order to complete the update as it is not available over-the-air . Which is weird as most devices offer over the net , hasslefree , on-the-go updates .
All said and done an upgrade is an upgrade and all sony lovers would welcome the upgrade and start hoping for a jelly bean announcement soon !

Update change-log

  • New ways to experience your tunes, images, videos and films with Sony’s media applications – “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies”
  • Extended standby mode, increasing standby time by up to four times (depending on user-profile and data consumption)
  • Lock screen with improved functionality
  • Resizable widgets for improved personalization
  • Improved control of your mobile data consumption
  • Recent Apps button for a clear overview of your applications.

Galaxy Ace 2 & Galaxy S Advance skip ICS to get JB
Galaxy Ace 2 & Galaxy S Advance skip ICS to get JB

A news for Galaxy Ace 2 & Galaxy S Advance users – a few hours ago Samsung Bulgaria Facebook page confirmed Android 4.1 Jelly Beans update for these two mid range android handsets skipping Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update.

No android device has any skipped android version update like this before. So naturally GSMArena expresses a bit doubt about the reliability of the page admin. But if Samsung is really putting efforts for mid range androids, small android manufactures like Micromax, ZTE and etc. are likely to face a tough competition.

Probably devs would take some months to complete a final update. Let’s hope it will come ASAP !

Happy Updating - www.androidnova.org
