Fake You – Fake your Friends and Family!

Greetings! Time to get out of boring conversations!

It was Sunday and I was on a date, a boring date.

She talked nothing more than of her Fake friends and how they treated her *sigh*.

It went on for about two hours when I thought I’ll go mad if I listen more. To her courtesy, I opened up my lovely Android device and opened the application Fake you, and then I quickly set up a fake call after 30 seconds, told her that I was checking the mail and boom, I was ready. Those 30 seconds did lasted long, then came my awaited fake call, I acted quickly, said a word or two to her saying it was an emergency and ran off! Quick Escape!

Thank-you Fake You! Trust me, it is a Amazingly Mind Blower Android App

So let’s have a deeper look at the app,

With Fake you, you can –

1) Fake Calls :- With this feature, you can quickly sneak out of a boring conversation by setting up a fake call or make a fake call or even set up a fake missed call!

AndroidNova.org

2) SMS – This feature lets you receive or send a Fake SMS to any Number or even to your contacts!

Note – Sending a Fake SMS to contacts won’t send it for real! Obviously!

3) Fake Battery – The best feature to get your phone back from those little cousins or those fussy toddlers who love caressing(read, harassing) and playing with your phone! Just set the Battery Level to be shown and set the time!

4) Fake Balance – This feature helps you to fake around friends that you have a lot of green in your device! The digits can go up to 7!

AndroidNova.org

5) History – A coming soon feature! It will let you know the fake things you did last time and you can quickly delete them or apply them again!

AndroidNova.org

So that’s all! Happy faking!

WAZE-The Social Network Based Realtime GPS App
WAZE-The Social Network Based Realtime GPS App

Haven’t we all been in that time crunch situation, when we need to get to office or college, or worse, meet that constantly nagging girlfriend (hope she isn’t reading this!) and suddenly, you are bombarded with that annoying , apparently the most important question answerable by man as of today-

“HOW LONG BEFORE YOU REACH?”

One such situation arose when I was late (as I always am..) and I receive the expected call “ Dude! HOW LONG BEFORE YOU REACH? ”.  How I wish they could understand this one thing… How is a person supposed to know about the traffic he can’t see?

That’s when I unlocked my Android and opened this app I had downloaded deciding to put it to test –WAZE. Here I was, putting my friendship, probably more (if you know what I mean) at risk, and was now at the mercy of Waze to give me an expected time of arrival, or simply ETA.

But before I proceed, let’s see what the app promises to deliver:

- Community generated real time traffic

- Complete voice navigation

- Automatic re-routing

- Knowledge based learning

- Meet ups! (Share ETA with other Waze users)

- Live maps

So, I punch in my destination with some difficulty (Waze is still new, so there are still a few places which haven’t been added by users yet), but they have this really awesome integration with Google Maps and Foursquare to search for places. At 10:00 a.m, Waze gave me an ETA of 10:28 a.m (This was done taking the knowledge based learning algorithm, where an approximation of time taken by other Waze users on the same route was considered).

I took a deep breath, and with courage in my heart, messaged my friend that I’d meet her by 10:35 to be on the safe side (with our superbly B-MCed Mumbai roads, even God wouldn’t know when you’d get traf-fucked!).

Now, one really cool thing you discover is that on start-up, you are asked if you are the one at wheel, and if you are you should probably increase the voice navigation volume and concentrate on driving (Aww.. this app cares for you!). I was in a cab but still decided to test the voice navigation and I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the familiar female voice I was so accustomed to hearing on Ovi Maps (Sexy! as I called her, back then in the good ol’ Nokia days), asking me to take a right and then turn left.

While in the cab I decided to play around with the app a little more as Sexy (a must for all you forever alone guys) continued to guide me. In the neat layout of the app you can’t miss the report button, which, as the name suggests lets you report accidents, police checking, speed trap cameras or traffic jams (medium-heavy or stand-still) allowing you to change your decision and take a different route (keep in mind that Waze has already taken into consideration reports by other users on your route and decided the optimal route beforehand).

In the middle of all the experimentation, my friend calls again, this time with a not-so-subtle threat, “I will leave at sharp 10.30 with or without you.” (Sigh! Girls, after all, will be girls) I looked into my phone, Waze indicated 15 more minutes to go, and it was just 10:05! Did that mean I would reach early? That priceless feeling you get when you reach your destination earlier than expected, for the very first time began to wash over me. Just as I was dreaming of gloating and considering the possibility of the existence of a God, BOOM! A red box appeared on my screen –“Mr. XYZ reported a heavy traffic 300m ahead.” Just as I was trying to understand what it meant, my cab jerked and came to a halt. There it was, the sight which makes your blood pressure shoot –TRAFFIC (so much for faith… heh). But then, I realized, Waze was right! It did take me around ten minutes to get out of that traffic, and I was still going to reach at my ETA.

Back with my eyes on the screen I saw various other toddlers (avatars for new Waze users) like wazers in my vicinity (How cool is that? Pinging random wazers! Another score for the forever alone!). However, I decided to skip this part- chatting with unknown people really isn’t my thing.

Suddenly Sexy makes an announcement, “You are now reaching your destination.” And just like that, I reached at 10:30, on the dot (Five minutes earlier than the dot, to be precise.)

I can’t thank Waze enough, as for the first time, I could get out of my cab, walk up to my friend, look her in the eye, and say, “Right on time, sweetie!”

WAZE-The Social Network Based Realtime GPS App

What we liked about the app:

  1. Social network / real-time traffic updates work like a charm and we were totally in awe with this concept
  2. Really cool options with the ability to report even police checking
  3. Optimal route calculation
  4. Strong integration with Facebook / Foursquare / Twitter
  5. Neat map display with the option of night (which, for the record, looks pretty darn hot) and day modes
  6. Waze points -the more you travel, the more points you earn, the better your rank (something like Foursquare)

What we didn’t like:

  1. Optimal routes may not be favorable for users, and if you prefer another route, route recalculation might cause your phone to crash
  2. Social network based system needs time to grow, as it depends on a number of users with reports etc.
  3. The layout needs to grow up a little (Honestly, baby waze toddlers for new waze users, is downright weird, when the ‘baby’ is supposedly driving and navigating)

On the whole, I loved the concept of Waze. Seems to have much promise, and has a great chance of being very popular.

Now you can  instantly translate printed words from one language to another with your built-in video camera, in real time!

Till now it was available for iOS, but recently Quest VIsual has launched its product ‘ Word Lens ‘ for the Android platform also.

Well, the bad news is that its not available for free !. Currently its available to download at price a of  $4.99 (approx 275 INR) from Google Play.

People are not happy with the fact that the paid version of Word Lens includes only one language  pack. Additional language packs have to  be purchased from within the app.

Available language pairs are:

  • English -><- French
  • English -><- Spanish
  • English -><- Italian

The best part of the app is that,

  • It gives you translation on the go.
  • NO NETWORK required – results appear immediately on your video screen when you need it, anywhere in the world.
  • Easy to use, like the regular camera
  • Look up translations by typing them in, or clicking on a word.

I bet, this is one handy app for any one travelling across the globe, especially Europe ;-) . Now sit back and lets enjoy the apps introductory video below.

Good news for  bloggers, website owners and webmasters !

They can now  collect user engagement data form their applications. ie. Developers can now use the Google analytics reports to measure,

  • The number of active users are using their applications.
  • From where in the world the application is being used.
  • Adoption and usage of specific features.
  • In-app purchases and transactions
  • Device overview
  • User behaviour, Engagement flow, App crashes

The Google Analytics SDK also gives  tools to monitor the success of mobile marketing campaigns. You can track activity from a click on your ad, to the Android Market, to app download through in-application usage and transactions. This provides a powerful platform to measure and optimize all your application marketing efforts.

~ Google developer site.

This is a good move by google as the analytics suite will give mobile developers a deeper understanding of how the user interacts with the app and greater control on their app !

You can download  and view the screen-shots of the google analytics app over here.

Hello nerds, This tutorial is mainly intended for looking into some other concepts like GUI of Android development. The concept of “Toast” would be actually covered.

First you have to create HelloWorld App. After you’ve created your first HelloWorld app, its time for some additional tasks! (Make sure you’ve set your AVD already).

If some of you guys are wondering what a Toast is, well here’s the answer: Click!

Development :

Step 1: The first thing we are going to accomplish is changing the strings.xml (Path:- AppName > res > values > strings.xml) file to add another node under app_name. We will do this by copying the node above it and pasting the copied material directly under the last </string> element. Then we will change the name of the string to press and in between we will write Press Me!. Next we will alter the hello node and change the text to say Enter Your Name Here: instead of Hello Android, Hello World!.

Step 2: Next step, is to design the GUI (Graphical User Interface). To do this navigate to main.xml (Path:- AppName > res > layout > main.xml) and we are going to go over what everything does up to this point. Set your main.xml file as shown in the below picture.

Make sure you’ve set the Orientation as vertical, otherwise ie, if its horizontal maybe the GUI controls won’t be shown when the app is run.(in an HVGA Emulator, or maybe its me) Anyways you are free to toggle between vertical/horizontal and see what happens.

Note : Next step needs basic knowledge of java.

Step 3: Now this is a tricky step, and it includes Java code modifications. I suggest you to google to know exactly what all these codes means be it functions, classes, methods, objects or imports. You can refer the Wiki or the Oracle docs if you want to learn more about Java. Anyways for keeping this Tutorial simple, just modify the Java file (Path:- AppName > src > com.example.helloworld > HelloWorldActivity.java)  as shown below:

Code:

package com.example.HelloWorld;

import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.EditText;
import android.widget.Toast;

public class HelloWorldActivity extends Activity {
    private Button b;
    private EditText disp;
    private String getText;;

    /** Called when the activity is first created. */
    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
        b = (Button) findViewById(R.id.go);
        // To perform click operation on "Press me" Button
        b.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
            public void onClick(View v) {
                // TODO Auto-generated method stub
                disp = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.helloName);
                getText = disp.getText().toString();
                // to display toast
                Toast toast = Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Hello "
                        + getText + "!", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT);
                toast.show();
            }
        });

    }
}

don’t just copy-paste the respective code. If you run into massive errors or problems only, do that. Its better to type the codes by yourself and see what all AutoFill options/suggestions are given by Eclipse. Anyways try to correct the errors by yourself, it maybe only a spelling-mistake, but you have to identify it where.

Step 4: After doing all these above mentioned tasks, its time for the output. Be sure to click “Save All” (Ctrl+Shift+S) button in the Eclipse. Also make sure your Project is free from errors, otherwise it would not run. You can also clean your Project (Some errors maybe automatically fixed) by navigating to Project > Clean…

Right Click your Project > Run As > 1 Android Application
Your Emulator would start, and you’ll see in the Eclipse as apk installing, running etc..
If your Project is a Success, you’ll get the output as shown in the below picture:

And that’s it
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Its made as simple as possible and omitted some theories from the Original source. You can get to it, and see the xml parts explained.

Hello nerds, This is my first tutorial on how to make a Hello Android Application.
