Samsung has announced the S7710 Galaxy Xcover 2, a rugged IP67-certified smartphone. This means it is waterproof and is impact and dust resistant. While today’s smartphones may boast of as many pixels as on your television and a processor which is faster than your PC, but they are not great at outdoor use. One drop and you are almost guaranteed of a big repair bill. But that’s not the case with Samsung Xcover 2.

Though it looks like a regular Galaxy handset in a very sturdy case, but the Xcover 2 is much more than that. According to Samsung,

“Galaxy Xcover 2 is the ideal smartphone for active explorers who are enjoying outdoor lifestyles and seeking a durable mobile device with essential smartphone capabilities.”

Of course there are other water-resistant phones in the market, including its predecessor, the Galaxy Xcover. But what Xcover 2 offers is its new IP67 certified device can withstand damage if it is immersed in up to 1 metre deep in water for 30 minutes. While dust and sand have no chance of penetrating its surface with a battery cover lock as well as strap holder that the phone provides. Samsung has also added a dedicated camera key and encourages you to go and take pictures underwater with it.

As far as the specifications as a smartphone are considered, Xcover may not match a high end smartphone but its enough to fulfill your smartphone needs while going for an adventure.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 key specifications:

  • 4-inch TFT LCD display with 800 x 480 pixels and 233 ppi
  • 1GHz dual-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB of on-board storage expandable upto 32GB
  • Android v4.1 aka Jelly Bean
  • 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash
  • VGA front camera

But what’s interesting is that Xcover 2 was rumored to be launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona (February 25-28). But it chose to unveil it just days ahead of the scheduled BlackBerry 10 launch on January 30. It seems Samsung is trying to steal Blackberry’s thunder with this launch.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z with Android 4.1 announced

As there were rumours regarding Sony Tablet in last few days, Sony has officially taken the wraps off new Xperia Tablet Z today. At 6.5mm thickness, it is one of the thinnest tablets to be announced. Sony has released their list for xperia smartphones who are going to receive future updates in 2013.  Many xperia users are disappointed with them as Sony xperia U, Xperia Sola etc. will not be updated to Jelly Bean and future android verions. Sony explained by giving following explanation,

The quality of Xperia’s software experience is dependent on a number of factors including: screen resolution, hardware platform and RAM. In the case of Xperia go, this combination came together in a way that meant the user experience running JB was not adversely affected.

Unfortunately, in the case of Xperia tipo, Xperia miro , Xperia U and Xperia sola this wasn’t the case – so we made the decision to keep them on Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Well, sony thinks that consumers are fool. WE consumers are much more aware than before.

Xperia u and xperia sola both are powered by 1ghz dual core processor with Mali-400 GPU. SO, that means sony wants to say that newer but slower phone, Xperia J powered by 1ghz single core processor can handle Jelly bean but more powerfull, xperia u  powered by 1ghz Dual Core Processor can not handle Jelly Bean. Very, Strange explanation by sony.

Also, Sony Xperia U , Miro, Sola, tipo are 2012 NXT series devices. According to Sony, 2012 launched devices can not run 2012 android version.

Sony’s decision for not updating these devices is very disappointing which will definitely harm Sony’s market share.

If you are a Sony xperia phone owner then this might be a good news or bad news for you. Sony has revealed firmware update list for xperia smartphones who are going to / not going to receive android Jelly bean (4.1) update in near period of time.
