So you have a regular TV and are looking to upgrade to a ‘Smart TV’ that offers basic internet services like email, social networking, web browsing and allows you to watch videos on youtube. Guess what? You don’t have to spend a bomb. This little piece of hardware in the picture called the Micromax Smart Stick, lets you run Android on your TV and gives you the ability to do all that!
Dongles which convert ordinary TV into an Android device are a recent phenomenon and players like Amkette, Razer Bee, Portronics and Akai have already available as smart TV boxes in India. However, none of them launched dongles as small as that Micromax Smart Stick and though such a stick has been available in other markets for the past few months people in India could only buy them online.
The Micromax Smart Stick looks and feels just like a large USB stock and comes with an Android 4.0 operating system. It connects to your TV via the HDMI port. The stick has a female HDMI port so you will need to attach a separate HDMI cable to connect to your TV. This is good in case your TV’s HDMI port is at some hard to access position like at the back, as this arrangement will work better for you.
There is no battery in the device and therefore you will have to keep the charger attached all the time, but then that’s alright since it’s not a mobile device anyway. One also gets the ability to connect to the Stick a USB device for storage, wired keyboard mouse, or even hard disc drive.
The Smart Stick comes with a motion sensing remote. However, sadly the remote only gets navigation keys and other basic keys like home, return and options buttons. Micromax could have added a Qwerty keypad to the remote so that typing would have been easier. Though the stick supports any wireless keyboard, mouse but that will be a separate investment. In terms of connectivity you get an inbuilt WiFi.
Full Features and Specifications:
- ARM CORTEX A5 Processor working at 1 GHz
- 1 GB DDR3 RAM

- 4 GB internal storage expandable by another 32 GB with microSD card
- Android 4.0 aka ICS
- WiFi – IEEE 802.11 b/g/n

Utility:
It basically turns your TV into a mega-sized Android tablet. It allows users to watch not just TV programs but also to surf the net, play games and everything else that can be done on an Android tablet including downloading and using all the apps on Google Play store on TV screens.
Verdict:
The Micromax Smart Stick is priced at Rs. 4990 (MRP). With Android on board, a range of connectivity options, 1080p video playback out of the box and the ability to download a range of Apps from the Play store, the Smart Stick makes for an entertainment powerhouse for your TV. The addition of a Qwerty keypad to the remote and support for a 3G dongle would have definitely sealed the deal, but yet, the Smart Stick makes for a portable, powerful and efficient device to turn your idiot box into a smart television!
