Micromax Smart Stick

So you have a regular TV and are looking to upgrade to a ‘Smart TV’ that offers basic internet services like email, social networking, web browsing and allows you to watch videos on youtube. Guess what? You don’t have to spend a bomb. This little piece of hardware in the picture called the Micromax Smart Stick, lets you run Android on your TV and gives you the ability to do all that!

Dongles which convert ordinary TV into an Android device are a recent phenomenon and players like Amkette, Razer Bee, Portronics and Akai have already available as smart TV boxes in India. However, none of them launched dongles as small as that Micromax Smart Stick and though such a stick has been available in other markets for the past few months people in India could only buy them online.

The Micromax Smart Stick looks and feels just like a large USB stock and comes with an Android 4.0 operating system. It connects to your TV via the HDMI port. The stick has a female HDMI port so you will need to attach a separate HDMI cable to connect to your TV. This is good in case your TV’s HDMI port is at some hard to access position like at the back, as this arrangement will work better for you.

There is no battery in the device and therefore you will have to keep the charger attached all the time, but then that’s alright since it’s not a mobile device anyway. One also gets the ability to connect to the Stick a USB device for storage, wired keyboard mouse, or even hard disc drive.

The Smart Stick comes with a motion sensing remote. However, sadly the remote only gets navigation keys and other basic keys like home, return and options buttons. Micromax could have added a Qwerty keypad to the remote so that typing would have been easier. Though the stick supports any wireless keyboard, mouse but that will be a separate investment. In terms of connectivity you get an inbuilt WiFi.

Full Features and Specifications:

  • ARM CORTEX A5 Processor working at 1 GHz
  • 1 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 400 Mali 2d/3d GPU
  • 4 GB internal storage expandable by another 32 GB with microSD card
  • Android 4.0 aka ICS
  • WiFi – IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
  • Plug N Play
  • Can play 1080p videos

Utility:

It basically turns your TV into a mega-sized Android tablet. It allows users to watch not just TV programs but also to surf the net, play games and everything else that can be done on an Android tablet including downloading and using all the apps on Google Play store on TV screens.

Verdict:

The Micromax Smart Stick is priced at Rs. 4990 (MRP). With Android on board, a range of connectivity options, 1080p video playback out of the box and the ability to download a range of Apps from the Play store, the Smart Stick makes for an entertainment powerhouse for your TV. The addition of a Qwerty keypad to the remote and support for a 3G dongle would have definitely sealed the deal, but yet, the Smart Stick makes for a portable, powerful and efficient device to turn your idiot box into a smart television!

Polaroid to announce Android 4.0 powered interchangeable lens camera

Some of us may recall the camera company Polaroid demonstrating a device at CES last year, the Polaroid sc1630 that had Android 2.3 experience.

Moving ahead, Polaroid is set to announce an Android 4.0 powered interchangeable lens camera at the CES 2013 trade show. Imaging resource has written an article in which Scott Hardy, President and CEO of Polaroid, has confirmed the upcoming announcement. While Scott had commented that, “Additional information and specs will be released during the show”, a product image on a Russian social media site reportedly leaked the specs.

Polaroid IM1836

According to the rumors, the camera will be called the IM1836 and will be manufactured for Polaroid by Sakar. With a hardware design that closely resembles a Nikon 1 J series camera, the Polaroid IM1836 is said to feature an 18.1-megapixel sensor with an interchangeable mirrorless lens system. The backside will host a 3.5-inch touchscreen and the camera will offer HDMI output, Wi-Fi connection, and a pop-up flash.

Even so, Polaroid thinks simply going with a mirrorless interchangeable lens format will give the Polaroid Android camera an edge against other Android cameras like the Samsung Galaxy Camera and the Nikon S800c.

Well, we will have to wait and watch for that!

MK802 Android 4.0 Mini PC- AndroidNova.org
MK802 Android 4.0 Mini PC- AndroidNova.org

Howdy Readers,

The Tagline of a leading telecom company of India says, “An Idea can change your life”. Believe it or not, this small 6 word tagline has a very detailed meaning behind it when you think of it deeply. Anyways, neither the Telecom Company nor its tagline is actually the topic for today’s discussion.

We are actually here today to discuss about a single Idea of “Google Inc.” that has changed the whole world. Yes, I am talking about Android(s). Which has effectively changed not just a life but many lives across the globe. It won’t be wrong if we address the current era as The Android Era. Android, which was just a smartphone OS previously, is now capturing the digital market by entering in every kind of gadget, be it a watch or a digital point-shot camera or even a pen. Now we will throw some light on an another one such powerful device named as “MK802 Android 4.0 Mini PC”.

To start off with, MK802 Android 4.0 Mini PC is currently the world’s smallest and most powerful hardware existing in the Android Era as of now. It is basically the world’s most compact computer/CPU powered by Android OS v 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich.

Built and Design:

The device dimensions measure 3 x 1 x 0.4 inches and it weighs just 0.92 ounces. It also has a microSD card slot for extra storage, a mini HDMI port for connecting an external display, a full-sized USB port for a keyboard, mouse, or any other accessory that can be connected via an HDMI port, and a mini USB port which you can use to power the MK802, connect it to a computer, or plug in various peripherals. The device does not have a power switch and gets automatically switched on when connected to any display device.

Tech-Specs:

The device has a single-cored 1.5 GHz Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor with 1 GB DDR3 RAM, 4 GB of storage and connectivity to data via Wi-Fi by an internal 802.11b/g/n wireless card.

Operating System:

The MK802 Android 4.0 Mini PC, as its name suggests, runs on Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich, with no additional skins or tweaks from the Manufacturer. The device has USB ports for connecting USB keyboards and mouse, and works exactly as any other Android Device. Just like the long press action in Android phones and tablets, you need to click for long, for swiping the recent apps, click the app, hold and swipe the mouse over the screen. The feel of using is exactly the same as using any other Android Smartphone and you can use all the supported Android Apps like Play Store, YouTube, Gmail in exactly the same manner as you use it in any other Android Smartphone.

Performance:

The Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor (clock speed 1.5 GHz) and along with 1 GB RAM makes the MK802 Android 4.0 Mini PC powerful enough to do anything whether it be multi-tasking, powerful HD gaming or any other task. The only negative thing we found in this device was that for now it does not support 1080p video playback and we hope the manufacturer soon enables this feature in the future updates of the device.

The Verdict:

The MK802 Android 4.0 Mini PC is basically a compact and a powerful CPU, a unique innovation and one of its own.  It is available in the market for just $77 which adds a feather in its cap. The only thing that sets us back from addressing it as a “PERFECT DEVICE” are the video playback of maximum resolution at 720p and no words from the manufacturer regarding the Firmware Update.

The drama about the 4.0 updates for HTC Desire HD had been going on for a while, So many things had been said these days and so many rumours were out about the updates but HTC has finally put an end to everything saying this handset will not be getting any 4.0 update. This has officially been announced by HTC that the handset will no longer be getting any updates due to a degraded customer experience.According to HTC, the decision was made after “extensive testing” and it was determined that handset owners would be served better if the phone remained on its current software build.it should be noted that the device is currently running  android operating system 2.3.

HTC Desire HD is not going to taste ICS aka android 4.0.

One of the biggest problems with Google Android is the fragmentation caused by allowing manufacturers to customize the mobile OS in order to match their own hardware and software requirements. In the case of HTC upgrading a mobile OS alongside the HTC Sense UI has proven tricky, often causing device upgrade issues for current customers. The biggest problem occurs because the HTC Sense UI takes up additional information on top of Google’s own operating system.
According to HTC, “after extensive testing, it was determined that the current version of HTC sense with the android on HTC Desire HD provides the best experience to the users. In addition, when it comes to the new version of software, we take many things in our mind but the customer’s experience on that product is the deciding factor for us.we apologise for the confusion this change may have caused to our customers.”

HTC Desire HD owners will surely be disappointed with this news.Although there is no official announcement from HTC for the updates of HTC thunderbolt and HTC inspire 4G, it would be safe to assume that they will not be getting the updates too and will have to live only on their current operating system 2.3.

Give your thoughts and tell us how you feel about this, Are u disappointed with this or you think HTC made the right decision ?
