First Day Event Summary of Google I/O

First Day Event Summary of Google I/O

AndroidNova.org proudly brings you a summary of what;s launched/covered at Google I/O conference on 15 may 2013.Hold a deep breath as Google Entertains you with their breathtaking updates.Lets start the summary from Google Play Game services.

Google Made the  Games much more better

www.AndroidNova.org

Any gaming platform has its own social network, and Google’s cannot be left behind. Your Play Games identity will be managed by—you guessed it—Google+, but that’ll bring a whole bunch of social features to the table. The new app includes matchmaking and mulitplayer game options, an achievement system, saves that sync between devices linked to your account, and leaderboards in both “global” and “friends only” flavors. Basically, everything you’d expect to find rolled into a console gaming experience, for this generation anyway.

Of course, these features will only apply to Play-powered games, which will be tagged with a little controller-shaped badge for your identification convenience. Google Play Games will be lauching to Froyo+ device today, via a Google services update.

Better Google Maps with great battery backup and awesomely accurate location service

www.AndroidNova.org

Fused Location Provider is a new feature present in Google maps which will use all your phone’s sensors to find your location. Google’s claims that the location mode will use less than one percent of batter per hour when activated. However, we don’t know what  battery capacity Google’s talking about, and also that it would be an awesome achievement.

Second best about maps is improved geofencing. This is a an extreme leap in the app current update. since it will let your phone know when you enter an area that it should turn on functions, or perform certain tasks, but Google didn’t say much more than that it’s working on it. It’s been a big need on Android for a while now, though, so it’s encouraging.

And lastly is a smart detection of activity, which means your accelerometer will know when you’re walking, running, biking, or driving. Nice feature for people interested in activites where enormous movement is involved.

Google Play Music Subscriptions

www.Androidnova.org

You can now buy a music subscription from Google.Google Play Music subscription  launches in the US today. It costs $10 per month. Everybody gets a 30-day free trial, if you are early birdie then only 8$.

During today’s Google I/O keynote, Google introduced All Access, which it is better for music discovery than its competitors like spotify. At first, it seems like a simple on-demand-meets-radio service with the personalization options you would expect. It works on phones, tablets and web browsers.

From a design and UX perspective, the innovation comes from the degree to which it’s easy to switch between the hands-on and hands-off experiences. If you don’t know what you want to listen to you can just hit “Listen Now” and start listening to something like we do for FM Radios or internet Radios ,”hear whats being played on air”.

The best part of the offer is You can get to keep the awesome features that came with Google Music. They’re totally integrated. It’s on-demand music, radio, and online storage locker for your personal collection all in one place.that’s icing on the chocalate cake for us

Google has never tried  a streaming music answer to services like Spotify and SoundCloud. Google has the infrastructure to make this sound service a success. We’ll have to wait and see which service comes out on top.

Recon Instrument’s Jet: Google Glass by a third party manufacturer

www.AndroidNova.org

Three years ago Recon Instruments came out with one of the first goggles with a HUD.  And today at I/O, Recon is debuting the Jet, a Google Glass-like set of shades that the company says is comparable to a tablet or smartphone (or Glass).

We don’t have much specifications about Jet other than a set of specs that include:

Wi-Fi, GPS, a dual-core processor, ANT+, Bluetooth, GPS, a HD camera and multiple sensors.Recon claims to have native apps built that allow users to browse the web, stream video, connect to Facebook, keep track of your activities and the like.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Oppa Google Style!!!

www.AndroidNova.org

Whatever Google does it does that in style. Yeah that what it proved with the Google Layered Samsung Galaxy S4 ie S4 Google Edition. If you have been an regular and advanced android user then you might have noticed that bloatwares like Touchwiz ,Htc Sense slow you phone down. Google understood this and released it own version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Yes. The samsung galaxy S4 is the new Nexus. The phone will be launched on June and will comprise of latest Android 4.2 Jellybean.

The new S4 with pure Google costs $649. It will be available on Google playstore from June. Being a Nexus now Samsung Galaxy s4 will receive all the android updates like the other Nexus Devices.  Samsung galaxy s4 is the first phone withexynos octa ie 8core processor(though 4 cores cud run simultaneously) packed with a 2GB of ram and Full HD display. The main feature of this s4 is that it would bootloader unlocked and factory unlocked thus custom rom development will be awesome.

Google Play for Education

www.AndroidNova.org

Google Play for Education sorts apps by grade level and subject matter, making it easy for teachers to find exactly what they want to teach to their student. It can also push content to any associated tablets—think books, lessons, and relevant YouTube videos—all at once, through the same mechanism.

But this feature requires every student to have a Google Account, which means they’re more likely to use Google’s other services and become entangled in Google’s cloud environment. It would be insanely wrong to run Play for Education without student accounts, and there’s nothing wrong with marketing your products to people freely. But it’s worth noting that the sooner you start leaning on Google for your apps and content, the harder it is to switch down the line if you’re so inclined.

Google Play for Education launches this fall , while app submissions will be accepted as soon as this summer.

Google Hangouts the new era of unified messaging

The long-speculated Babel all-in-one chat service has finally been revealed as Hangouts.

Google Talk, Hangouts, Voice, Google+ messenger: all of it is finally integrated into one monster of a unified chat service. Taking on the Google Hangouts name does make sense, too, since Google has been recently for trying to add as many users onto Google+ as they can.

Users finally get a synchronized chat across virtually every single one of your devices, with the ability to go back through chat history, delete messages, and grab files on every single one of them. You can hold group chats with any number of friends, and just like the Hangouts you know and love, you can also move straight into video chat from the text based or image based hangout.

What’s more, the new Hangout version will be hitting multiple platforms, coming  on Android, Chrome, iOS and of Gmail.Sorry! blackberry users.

Yes guys.. The time we Android geeks wait for is finally here. The Google I/O 2013 is just less than an hour away. View the live streaming of Google I/O 2013 keynote right here on AndroidNova.org

Intel's first phone the Lava Xolo x900, the legend suppressed
www.AndroidNova.org

April 2012, was the time when Samsung was ready to launch its flagship The Samsung Galaxy S3 and on the other part, Intel announced its first Intel phone based on Atom Processor via Lava International and Xolo, The Lava Xolo X900. Company had claimed Xolo x900 to be the fastest and better then Samsung Galaxy S3 in all respect.

When we got our hands on to xolo x900, we felt company’s claim to be valid in respect of performance of the phone but what we didnt like was :-

  • Phone was launched with Gingerbread
  • Dull Camera quality and now worsened after ICS 4.0.4
  • Locked boot-loaders
  • Poor Battery
  • Users also reported about network dropping problem after ICS update
  • Company claimed Xolo x900′s expandable capacity to be upto 16 GB but we also noticed a card slot present at the back of the phone which is capable of handling 64GB of card easily.
  • Poor Customer Support :- We also faced this problem. We called xolo care and one of their  customer executive said that “they are dispatching xolo x900 now after keeping it for two weeks” and other said ” we have just received your product”.

We thought that company will improve some of the technical problems i.e. software bugs like: camera picture and network problem etc by providing Jellybean update and  users were eagerly looking forward for that.

But, Xolo’s co-owner announced that ” As of Now, Intel has no plans to upgrade Xolo x900 to Jelly Bean and we have no controls over X series phone”.

After getting this news we heard another words from Xolo that they launched another Intel’s Device Xolo X1000 which is based on same board and processor and up-gradable to Jellybean.

On the other side, Samsung proved themselves “The True Brand” by announcing Samsung Galaxy S3 to be upgradable to Android key lime pie or similar versions which was the rival of Xolo x900.

We had also launched a petition to support Xolo x900 users to get what a 22,000 INR phone deserves (now priced at 13-14k). May be xolo or Intel is not upgrading Xolo x900 as to get increased sales for xolo 1000.

Whatever be the reason, think twice before buying next Intel- Xolo which will be leaked tonight exclusively on AndroidNova, Stay tuned .

Hands on with Ubuntu Touch – The Ubuntu Mobile OS.

Ubuntu touch has become a news after they released the developers preview on  February 2013. Since then i had been waiting for an Ubuntu device to experience the thrill. But unfortunately they have released the developers preview only for Nexus 4 and i ain’t got one. After a lot of googling and findings, i have got some Ubuntu flashable files for Nexus S. And after a few moments our Nexus S was ready with Ubuntu for testing.

Initial Impression

” Wow this UI is super cool ” That was the response of my room mate after seeing the mobile with Ubuntu. It’s fresh , neat and eye catching. If you are a regular user of Ubuntu desktop, you will feel right at home when you switch on the mobile. The standard purple and orange theme of desktop versions has been well ported to the Ubuntu touch. Icon designs are very much similar to the desktop.

There is no physical button support on Ubuntu touch and you don’t expect UI buttons like ICS/JB neither. Ubuntu touch works completely with the gestures you make on the screen. The combinations of this gestures makes the transition of UI. This will be little agonizing for everyone, but as like everything else, you will get used to it eventually.

Swiping from left will bring you a desktop style vertical apps bar, you can customize this with your favorite apps, and when you swipe from right side, it gives you access to the recent apps. Scroll down from the top, just like the android status bar, will let you manage the OS system controls such as battery, network, message and sounds. The Universal search option too will be revealed with this action. Swipe up when you are in any application, and that will bring up the application specific settings menu.

Message and Dialer

Swipe down from the top and then you will see the messages, Facebook updates, missed called and almost everything in communication. Message app looks very simple and elegant. The quick reply is very handy.

You open the dialer then it’s a wow, the color combination is simply awesome and trendy.

Other Apps

Camera app in Ubuntu is very basic, just gives you an option of zoom-in/out , toggle flash etc. It will allow you to use front facing camera too. Music and Videos available with Ubuntu will do the job fine , but i didn’t find an equalizer or any advanced music settings. The Browser app does require a mention here, It gives you a full screen view without having any button on the interface. Swiping up from the bottom will bring up the  address bar, page forward-backward controls. If you swipe up a little more  it will take you to the app-settings menu.

Canonical has put a lot of energy to make the Ubuntu touch similar to the Ubuntu desktop version. They have even promised that the Ubuntu touch applications can be run in desktop and vice-versa. This way once you connected your mobile to a projector or a big screen, it works same as a desktop.

Verdict

Ubuntu touch is still in beta release, it has a lot of bugs, device hanged multiple time when i was using it, and most of the apps doesn’t work in the way it should. The text/information displayed in the screenshots including messages, calendar notification, contacts are preloaded with the OS. They may need at least 6 to 8 months to make the OS available to the public, may be more.

Being a techie, I just can’t leave this place without appreciating the Canonical and Linux community for making this wonderful asset. I personally believe, few years ahead, multiboot will be very common in mobile devices. Just like the computer running with multiple OS. And if Ubuntu can contribute in this, then it will be the beginning of new era.

Instructions and download links for installing Ubuntu Touch on Nexus S can be found here. This release is not meant for daily use as it’s just a beta release. Download and install it at your own risk. Neither me nor AndroidNova will be responsible if you brick your device. Happy flashing.

A big Thanks to my roomie Salah for providing the device by knowing the potential risk involved.

Howdy Readers,

Many tech-enthusiasts round the globe must be eagerly waiting for the biggest tech event  ever. Yes, undoubtably we are talking about Google I/O 2013 which is just 14 days away from us.

Well, we do have an intresting news for everyone out there who are waiting for this event. Earlier today, Google Inc. posted a detailed schedule of the complete event this year.

The event would be a 3-day event that would be held from May 15, 2013 to May 17, 2013.

This time, it is expected that Android 5.0 “Key Lime Pie” has been delayed as many manufacturers failed to provide Android 4.2.2 to its users, instead a major Android Jelly Bean update v4.3 is expected. Also Crome and Cromebooks are seem to be a major attraction for this year’s event.

Google will also be streaming 40-45% of the event live on the go on YouTube including the Keynote speech. So you can even enjoy the major portions of the event sitting at your home. Also Team AndroidNova will make special arrangments to cover the complete event exclusively so that you can taste every bit of the event on the go.

You can even check out the complete event schedule here.

There must have been times when you had to share your internet connection with others even if you do not wish to. There may be times when an annoying relative who has come to stay over asks to use your Wi-Fi or your neighbor barges into your house saying he has some urgent work, and you can’t deny in such situations. And many times it so happens that your password is too embarrassing to share with others (if you know what I mean :-P ). If sharing your Wi-Fi password is your biggest concern, than this is the best solution for you.

Please note: This method is only useful when the other person is using Android, iOS or any other device which can read QR Codes.

Well the concept is quite simple; we would be creating a QR Code with the details like WiFi network name (SSID), password, encoding type etc, so that the scanning of the code would be enough to get a connection.

There are couple of online QR Code generators, like QR Zilla and ZXing which lets you to create a QR Code for WiFi connection. You can always use other QR Code generators provided it has such feature.

screenshot
androidnova.org

So just hop on to any QR Code generator, input all your required details (SSID, password, etc) and click Generate to get your QR Code. So next time when someone asks for your Internet connection, just ask them to scan that particular QR Code and voila! That device would be connected to your Wi-Fi network.

And if you are probably wondering about disconnecting the device, then just turn your router OFF for a couple of minutes and that it, it is disconnected. If that device needs the connection again, then it needs to scan the QR Code again.

So you have successfully shared your Wi-Fi connection without sharing your password.
